Steve McQueen: A Tribute to the King of Cool is the story of McQueen's incredible 50-year sojourn from troubled youth to movie icon beloved by millions worldwide.

His life read like a Hollywood screenplay: a Midwesterner from the wrong side of the tracks whose formative years were marked by dysfunctional behaviour, petty crimes and a stint in reform school. He bounced from job to job as a teenager and after a three-year term in the Marines, McQueen stumbled into acting. He eventually became the biggest movie star of The Beatles generation.

McQueen was cinema's greatest anti-hero while remaining a box-office champion at the same time. His macho swagger, rugged animal magnetism and vulnerability solidified his leading man status throughout the sixties and seventies in blockbusters such as The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles, Bullitt, The Getaway, Papillon and The Towering Inferno. More than three decades after his death, his timeless look and utterly cool persona is the prototype for today's action movie star.

Off screen, McQueen was perhaps even more intriguing than the characters he played on celluloid. He was an expert motorcyclist and race-car driver, a licensed pilot, and a skillful martial artist. He was anti-establishment, a true rebel, a man's man, a lady's man and the original bad-boy.

Through this 360-degree perspective told in photo and passage form by family, friends, biker buddies, actors, directors, producers, business associates, acquaintances and fans from around the globe, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the man and get a little closer to the utterly charismatic, much loved and much missed 20th Century icon who was Steve McQueen.

Description

James Hunt is remembered more for his girlfriends and wild personal exploits than for his skills in a race car. But the excesses of his glamorous life cannot hide the fact that he was, in many people's opinion, the fastest driver on the Formula One circuits in the 1970s. In an era dominated by the likes of Emerson Fittipaldi, Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson, Hunt stood out in terms of raw speed and his seemingly effortless ability to plant a Formula One car on pole position. In this first full and comprehensive account of the life of James Hunt, the author and his researchers have examined every detail of the driver's life - from his very earliest days to the last hours of his existence - as well as the lives of the people he left behind. It is a story many have tried to tell - but never in such a complete way. This is that story.

Mark Webber: Two Steps Forward - A Formula One Pictorial History

Description

Mark Webber is one of the "unsung" international stars of Australian sport. To get to the very top level of world motorsport without family wealth or substantial corporate support or contacts is a massive achievement. To get there was one thing; to make his mark on Formula 1 has been another. Mark is an individual who remains completely grounded, and a typical Aussie, despite the rarified air and occasionally bizarre bubble that F1 drivers live in.

A dramatic look at Peter Brock's life - in particular the period which fashioned his character, created the legend and made him a household name in Australia - as told by people who knew him from the start.

Description

Long regarded as one of the best touring car racers in the world Peter Brock was a legend in Australian sporting lore. Much has been written about him but like many famous people his early life has never been accurately documented. Writer, Colin Fulton, with help from the Brock family and many people who knew Peter in his early days have chronicled the racer's early life; from his childhood to his first victory in The Great Race in 1972.
Peter was sometimes a controversial figure and this book reveals little known facts about his life in the army as a National Serviceman, the failure of his first marriage and the gestation of the famous A30 racer which launched his career. All the central figures in his story are here: his brothers and key family members, the legendary head of the Holden Dealer Team, Harry Firth; his Chief Mechanic and friend for many years, Ian Tate; fellow racer and HDT team member, Colin Bond; the man who actually instigated the Holden Dealer Team, Peter Lewis-Williams, childhood and school friends, plus many more.
Both photographer, Terry Russell, and writer, Colin Fulton, knew Peter in his youth and their work reveals much about his childhood and teenage years. Colin Fulton was a journalist and as a racing driver and long time friend of Peter Brock has used his knowledge to write a vivid and accurate portrayal of this unique Australian legend's Road to Glory. Most of Terry Russell's photographs are published here for the first time.

Veloce Publishing - Automotive stuff: TOP GEAR'S STIG REVEALED AS BEN COLLINS

TOP GEAR'S STIG REVEALED AS BEN COLLINS

The BBC has lost a legal fight to stop publication of a book which reveals the identity of Top Gear's driver The Stig.

The High Court in London refused to grant the BBC an injunction blocking the publication by HarperCollins of an autobiography of former Formula Three driver Ben Collins.

The book, called The Man In The White Suit, claims Mr Collins is the mystery driver on the BBC Two show.

The Stig is famous for his racing overalls and dark-visored helmet. His identity has long been a closely-guarded secret on Top Gear - one of the BBC's most popular shows in the UK and around the world.

Last week, HarperCollins said it would "vigorously defend" its right to publish the book, adding it was "disappointed that the BBC has chosen to spend licence fee payers' money to suppress this book".

However Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman attacked the publisher, writing on the Top Gear website that the BBC had a right to protect Stig's anonymity "from a bunch of chancers" who were "hoping to cash in on it".

Great Ideas In Motion: A History of Chrysler In Australia 1946 - 1981 (Signed)

Great Ideas In Motion: A History of Chrysler In Australia 1946 - 1981 (Signed) - Buy the book from the Automoto Bookshop

Chrysler had a 30-year history in Australia—June 1951 to August 1981—that was characterised by the proverbial boom-and-bust syndrome. It was certainly an entertaining period during which the company went from a small-time assembler of cars carrying the three traditional name badges of Dodge, DeSoto and Plymouth to one of the larger industrial complexes in the country built around one car—the Chrysler Valiant.

At its introduction in January 1962 the company's dealers were inundated with buyers who wanted to be the first to have one. In the event only 1008 were available before a revised model appeared after just ten weeks. Only 10,009 of the second model were
available and again the dealers were able to sell every one they could get their hands on.

Those days were a far cry from the recent past when those same dealers struggled to sell the Chrysler Royal and the Simca Aronde. Interestingly, the Aronde was probably one of the best small cars at the time blighted only by the dreadful plastics in the interior. Its big brother, the Vedette, was a good car that was ignored by the motoring world.

During the mid-60s Chrysler became involved with the Rootes Group which added cars like the ubiquitous Hillman Imp, Hillman Minx, Hunter and Hustler as well as the conservative-but-luxurious Humber Super Snipe to the company's stable of cars. Five years later the company added the Mitsubishi Galant and, in 1977, the all-conquering Sigma to its range. There was rarely a dull moment!

The architect of much of this growth was David Brown, an engineer who had been recruited from New Process Gears in Syracuse, New York, to head up the Australian subsidiary and make it pay. He has
never really been credited with a major achievement in Australia's industrial history but neither the Tonsley Park nor Lonsdale factories would have been built had he not had the vision and tenacity to pursue them.

Unfortunately it all ended in tears when the last Valiant was driven off the assembly line by Brown in August 1981 thus bringing the Chrysler era in Australia to an end. From that point onwards all the cars and trucks no longer carried the famous Pentastar badge but the three diamonds of Mitsubishi.

Colin Chapman: Inside The Innovator

Colin Chapman: Inside The Innovator

Introduction

Colin Chapman was one of the greatest ever creative forces in the automotive world but he left behind a mixed legacy. Was he an unparalleled innovator who advanced the state of the art of sports and racing cars? Or was he an uninhibited exploiter of the uncredited ideas of others? In death as well as life Colin Chapman excites fevered debate about his achievements and methods.
Now Karl Ludvigsen gets to grips with the legend, digging deep beneath the skin of Chapman and his cars to explore and expose the motivations that drove this mercurial genius.
